Greek Music Department

The Greek Music Department was created in order to fulfill the need for an official body specializing in the collection, preservation, and study of Greek music. Maintaining an archival, research, and educational character, the Department collects, processes, and documents all kinds of material relevant to Greek music.

Archive

The Department collects recent editions of books, scores, periodicals and audiovisual material about most of Greek music genres (ancient, byzantine, folk, “rebetiko” and art music).. Acquisition of old publications and other rare material, such as ephemera , correspondence , manuscripts, photographs, periodicals and other documents, becomes possible through purchases and donations from old bookstores and collectors.

The acquisition and management of personal archives of composers, artists and teachers is also an important activity of the Greek Music Department due to the fact that these are an invaluable resource for the study of Greek music, and often prove to be the unique source for researchers, given the low publishing activity in the field of Greek music.
